I took ballet, jazz and tap as a kid. I was never going to be a professional dancer or anything. But it was fun to take those classes, learn routines and do recitals.
I bought canvas ballet slippers and a leotard. I already had tights and dance shorts. Honestly, adult classes are pretty lax about clothing, so you can wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Some people had socks and one person had yoga clothes. Just make sure to pin your hair back.
Now I'm on my 40s and my kiddos are in school. And I'm over the gym. It smells bad and using a workout machine is so boring. So I checked around and found a dance school that offers adult ballet. They had intro, beginning and intermediate. I tried beginning, even though I've taken it for 8 years. It was perfect.
The beginning level was perfect for me. They had a real piano and a great studio with laminate flooring and floor-to-ceiling mirrors. Wooden ballet barres. It was great!
It was a lot like taking ballet as a kid. Personally, I love this type of exercise - it incorporates body and mind.
