Modern Art

A lot of people get confused on what modern art is-- and that makes sense, as it encompasses several types of genres of painting and art. In theory, it is an evolving set of ideas between artists who wanted to find new and different approaches to making art. Here are a few of my favorites.

Jackson Pollack

Jackson Pollack (Jan. 28, 1912- Aug. 11, 1956) was an American born painter. He's one of the most well known abstract expressionist painters, notably for his "drip-style" paintings. He was famous during his lifetime, but he was an alcoholic known for having a very volatile personality.

Roy Lichtenstein (Oct. 27, 1923- Sept. 29, 1997) was an American pop artist. He became a leading figure in that style of modern art with is pop art through a specific parody style.

Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso (Oct. 18, 1881- April 8, 1973) was a Spanish born painter, sculptor, writer, playwright, and printmaker (among other things). He spent most of his adult life living in France. Most of his different periods of work (i.e. "The Blue Period") are considered part of modern art. He was also credited with co-creating the Cubist movement in art. He is one of the most well known artists of the 20th century.

Georgie O'Keeffe (Nov. 15, 1887- March 6, 1986) was an American artist most known for her paintings of very large flowers that often resembled something else.

Henri Matisse (Dec. 31, 1869- Nov. 3, 1954) was a French born artist known for his use of color. He was a sculptor & printmaker, but most well known for his amazing paintings.

Sonia Delaunay (Nov. 14, 1885- Dec. 5, 1979) was a Ukrainian-born French artist. She was known for her use of geometric shapes and strong color choices.
