Back when Europe's architectural structures were not so advanced, buttresses were the answer for keeping huge ceilings and bridges from collapsing. They proved to be very strong and sound in design, and now are all over.
You can't go very far in Europe without seeing one buttress supporting a building. There are many different kinds of buttresses: angled, clasping, diagonal, etc. Personally, my favorite are the setback buttresses, but the type is all dependent on what kind of wall the buttress is holding up. Next time you're in Europe, be sure to use this new term!
Buttresses were designed to be functional, but also beautiful!
Up above where the ceiling meets the wall is the buttress

Buttresses were definitely used to hold up the walkways of this city
You can sometimes find buttresses in huge cities as well with rich history
If you've visited the ancient cities of Europe, you've seen a buttress!
