I had my first taste of alcohol when I was six years old. We were all at the dinner table (my older brothers, sister, myself, mom, and dad) enjoying a meal of some sort of fish dish.
My mom was drinking a glass of Riesling wine and I really wanted to try it. I had asked her many times before that, but I remember her telling me it was only for adults. I didn't think that was very fair. As a kid I was like, "Um, why do adults have their own kind of drinks?" So silly and naive, right?
I must have been annoying enough, or I had worn her down from asking so many times, that she finally acquiesced and let me try her adult drink. I remember once it hit my tongue, I immediately wanted to throw up. I had never tasted something that was fruity and flowery and acidic. I spit it out all over the table.
My entire family was stunned into silence for a few seconds before my mother started laughing uncontrollably. Once she started, everyone else knew it was okay to laugh, too. Except me.
I was so put off by the taste of that alcohol that I didn't have another sip until I was a Sophomore in college!
