A black hole accretion disk

I read an entire article on accretion disks and I still don't get it.

I just read a story about accretion disks and I'm more confused than ever about space stuff. An accretion disk is a body of diffused space material, often in a circular shape, thus the term "disk".
It rotates around another body in space, more often than not, that body is a star. So, it's like the star has rings around it. However, there are also black hole accretion disks that pull matter into it's orbit, which causes it to disappear into the black hole forever. Space is very fascinating, but it is well above my intelligence level!
