One summer day, my husband and I took our daughter and son to a kite festival. There wasn't anything special about this festival or kites, but it was free and something to do outside.
Our kids were blown away by the kites that were there, and I have to admit, my husband and I were too. There were so many incredible kites, from small single liners to huge stunt kites. Many of the people there really knew what they were doing. Of course there were kites for sale, and our kids begged us to buy one.
We ended up buying four kites, one kite for each of us. I was afraid we were going to have all these kites and they would just sit in our garage like so many other things, but the following Sunday we took them out to the beach. We went the Sunday after that, and the Sunday after that. It soon became our weekly family outing.
Each Sunday we pack a picnic lunch, grab our kites and go to the beach or to a park for a fun day in the sun. We still have our first kites, but have grown into bigger and better ones.
Each of us now flies a multi-lined kite and we are all learning how to direct our kites and have more control over them.

Kites need wind to be able to fly. This means indoor stadiums like football domes or gyms are not good places to fly a kite. This also means that vacuums like that of outer space are also not conducive to flying kites. Look for an outdoor area with enough space to run around with your kite.
When it comes to cost and its relationship to quality, I have found that Prism Kite Technology delivers the best results, again and again. Prism's catalog of kites is sure to fit most pre-made kite needs.
My first real kite was a box kite. Looking at it on the ground, I had no idea how this thing would fly. After all, there aren't any box-shaped airplanes or gliders. It looked a bit like a hot air balloon, but there was nothing covering the top. Even today, box kites are enigmatic in my mind.
The box kite is one of the "greats" of the recreational kite world. There is a lot to like about the box kite, but the very nature of a box itself confines us to the 3rd dimension. It's time to branch out to the 4th.
