I've been enjoying learning about different currencies from my friends who travel overseas. A friend recently went to the Middle East and brought back some UAE dirham or United Arab Emirates dirham.
"Dirham" stems from the Greek work "Drachmae" which means "handful". So, it's a handful of Arab currency. Pretty cool! The official abbreviation is AED but I'm not entirely sure why. The AED was introduced in the 1970's as a replacement currency and it's stuck since then. It's really beautiful currency. I wish our money was so pretty!
