While Visiting Japan, I Accidentally Attended The Hamamatsu Kite Festival

In 2010 while visiting Japan with a friend, the two of us wanted to do all the exploring on our own, no tour guides. We scheduled some fun events, but the best ones we stumbled upon by accident.
My friend and I were in the coastal city of Hamamatsu one Sunday afternoon when we decided to take a walk by the sand dunes. It was a perfect day to walk along the beach. We were about a mile away when we saw something in the sky. We couldn't make out what it was and as we grew closer we became more and more intriguing.
It wasn't until the two of us were half a mile away when we realized the sight we were seeing were hundreds of kites. We were excited to get to the beach to learn what was going on.
We finally arrived at the dunes to find out we were in the middle of The Hamamatsu Festival. A famous kite festival held yearly on the beaches of Hamamatsu. It was a beautiful sight.
Hundreds of kites danced in the sky above us. I was in awe of the elaborate and artistic kites people were flying. I spoke to a woman who had a dragon kite which must have been over 8-feet-long. When I asked where she had bought it, she said she hand made it! I couldn't begin to think about how much work and time went into it.
I kept watching this one kite and the owner asked if I wanted to fly it! He taught me how to hold it properly and how to steer it. This day went down as one of my favorites in Japan.
