In 2010 while visiting Japan with a friend, the two of us wanted to do all the exploring on our own, no tour guides. We scheduled some fun events, but the best ones we stumbled upon by accident.
My friend and I were in the coastal city of Hamamatsu one Sunday afternoon when we decided to take a walk by the sand dunes. It was a perfect day to walk along the beach. We were about a mile away when we saw something in the sky. We couldn't make out what it was and as we grew closer we became more and more intriguing.
It wasn't until the two of us were half a mile away when we realized the sight we were seeing were hundreds of kites. We were excited to get to the beach to learn what was going on.
We finally arrived at the dunes to find out we were in the middle of The Hamamatsu Festival. A famous kite festival held yearly on the beaches of Hamamatsu. It was a beautiful sight.
