The life of American politician and decorated military hero John McCain III was celebrated today in a funeral in the nation's capital, where three former Presidents spoke as well as many leading political and business figures from across the country. McCain, a graduate of the Naval Academy, was almost killed in 1967 during the Vietnam War. He was captured and held prisoner until 1973, experiencing torture that left him with lifelong physical disabilities. He was known as a Maverick for reaching across the aisle and often putting American interests ahead of political positions. Elected to the House of Representativ in 1982 and to the Senate in 1987, re-elected 5 times.
