American Patriotism. And beef. Lots of it.
Uncle Sam, the animated historical figure who incites an odd hybrid of emotion that's somewhere between patriotism and, well, the kind of fear experienced by Catholic school kids who had nuns for teachers during the mid-1900's. For better or for worse, the United States was (officially) nicknamed Uncle Sam on this day in 1813 – apparently inspired by a meatpacker who courageously supplied barrels of beef to the U.S. Army during the War of 1812.
