History, Geography, Vikings
Every year, we come together to celebrate the first European to set foot in North America: Leif Erikson! Vikings "discovered" (if you don't count the millions of native peoples that were already living there and doing just fine) North America hundreds of years before some Italian guy did. They dubbed the new land "Vinland", and roughly 1000 years later we gather every October 9th to commemorate the great Norse explorer who led the way. Leif Erikson day originated in the Midwest (where a large population of Scandinavian immigrants settled) and is today an official state holiday in 8 US states and one province in Canada. You can learn more about Leif Erikson at your local library.
