Dogs, The Space Race, History
Before there were brave human astronauts and cosmonauts, there were brave animal astronauts and cosmonauts. Laika was one such cosmonaut, and was the first dog (or any animal for that matter) to orbit the Earth in Sputnik 2. Laika was a stray dog, grabbed off the streets of Moscow. At the time, it was unknown if humans could survive the launch into, or conditions of outer space. Laika did not survive, nor was she expected to. Her sacrifice was one of many that were crucial to humans achieving spaceflight, and her legacy is not forgotten. Laika is featured in various monuments and memorials in Russia, notably a statue and plaque at the Star City cosmonaut training facility in Moscow.
