Today in 1851, Herman Melville published his literary classic Moby Dick. However, this was not the first time people got to read the "Great American Novel". Prior to being published as a complete book, various volumes and chapters were published in both the United States and in Great Britain under the title "The Whale". There are many inconsistencies between these different publishings, resulting from both censorship and changes from Melville himself. The edition published on this day in 1851 is considered the definitive version of the book, and is still widely enjoyed and discussed around the world.
