"Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz." - Janis Joplin
When it comes to fancy cars, Mercedes is one of the first manufacturers that comes to mind, and today marks 118 years since the first Mercedes automobiles was delivered. One Emil Jellinek of Austria custom ordered the from neighboring Germany's Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft. This new car was lighter and faster than anything Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft had made since they began experimenting with automobiles or "horesless carriages" in 1886. The new car proved to be a success, and Jellinek eagerly bought 36 of them. Flattered by his support, the manufacturers named the new machine "Mercedes" as per Jellinek's request. "Mercedes" being the name of Emil Jellinek's daughter.
