“Watch the pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves.” — Benjamin Franklin (American Founding Father and Author of Poor Richard’s Almanack)
Today is Lucky Penny Day, celebrating the copper coin that debuted in 1793. It’s been said if you see a penny and pick it up, all day you'll have good luck, and coin collector Don Lutes proved that in January when a 1943 penny he saved for more than 70 years was auctioned for $204k, smashing all estimates. But don’t go looking through your couch cushions for fallen coins — this was just one of the 20 copper pennies that were accidentally minted when the federal government was conserving copper use during the WWII era, making this lucky penny an extremely rare find and the ultimate holy grail for coin collectors.
