“I paint my own reality. The only thing I know is that I paint because I need to, and I paint whatever passes through my head without any other consideration.” — Frida Kahlo, Mexican Artist
Today we celebrate the birthday of iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, known for her mesmerizing self-portraits and distinct sense of fashion. Kahlo’s life was plagued with illnesses and injuries, contracting polio at the age of five and suffering severe injuries from a horrific bus accident as a young woman — pain that was reflected in her works. 55 of Kahlo’s 143 completed works are self-portraits, often incorporating symbolic portrayals of her physical and emotional wounds. After Kahlo’s 1938 painting “The Frame” was acquired by the Louvre, she became the first Mexican artist to have their work entered into a major international collection — just one of many records Kahlo has set as an artist in both life and death.
