“Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable.” - Banksy, English Street Artist
Happy Birthday (possibly) to the English street artist known as Banksy! While the anonymous graffitist’s identity has never been officially confirmed, today is Robin Gunningham’s birthday — the man widely considered to be the elusive Banksy. Known for his provocative stenciled pieces, Banksy rose to popularity in the Bristol underground scene as a freehand graffiti artist, often incorporating popular culture or controversial imagery to make a political statement. Banksy no longer creates reproductions or photographs of his art, but existing prints of his most famous works are regularly sold for millions. A recent Sotheby’s auction sold a print of his mural “Balloon Girl” for more than $1 million — though Banksy, ever the merry prankster, shocked the crowd at the auction as the print was shredded by a tool he had implanted in the frame.
