“I'm not afraid of failing. I don't like to fail. I hate to fail. But I'm not afraid of it.” — Vince McMahon, Owner & CEO of WWE
Happy Birthday to WWE owner and CEO Vince McMahon — the innovative professional wrestling promoter is turning 74 today. After inheriting the family business from his father, McMahon transformed pro wrestling into “sports entertainment”, taking the faux athletic competition from dimly lit bingo halls to the big and bright lights of major sporting arenas. Disparate wrestling promotions dominated their designated portions of the country until McMahon’s World Wrestling Federation got a nationwide television deal in the early 1980s, effectively eliminating all of his competition as the WWF’s biggest superstars like Hulk Hogan and “Macho Man” Randy Savage became household names. Having dominated sports entertainment for nearly four decades now, McMahon is showing no signs of slowing down — he is currently in the midst of relaunching the XFL football league and is still the creative force behind all WWE programming.
