“They throw the ball, I hit it. They hit the ball, I catch it.” - Willie Mays, World Series-Winning Baseball Player and Member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame
Today is the 65th anniversary of “The Catch”, a miraculous defensive play made by New York Giants center fielder Willie Mays on a ball hit by Cleveland Indians batter Vic Wertz during Game 1 of the 1954 World Series. Often considered to be one of the best and most memorable moments in the history of baseball, Mays caught the ball over his shoulder, with his back to home plate, a move that led to the Giants claiming victory and sweeping the Series. A member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame since 1979, Mays spent 22 seasons playing for Major League Baseball and reached 660 home runs by the end of his career, currently the fifth all-time record.
