“Nature is so powerful, so strong. Capturing its essence is not easy - your work becomes a dance with light and the weather. It takes you to a place within yourself.” - Annie Leibovitz, American Portrait Photographer
Happy 70th birthday to celebrated photographer Annie Leibovitz, known for her enchanting portraits of public figures that have appeared in numerous publications, most notably Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair. Shooting photos of everyone from Bill Gates to Rihanna to U.S. President Barack Obama, Leibovitz famously puts her larger-than-life subjects in unusual and intimate settings or positions — she famously snapped the last image of John Lennon hours before his tragic murder in 1980, calling it “the photograph of my life”. Leibovitz also shot several famous album covers throughout her career, including Bruce Springsteen’s patriotic pose for 1984’s “Born in the U.S.A.” and the colorful image for Cyndi Lauper’s Grammy Award-winning hit “She’s So Unusual”. Among her many accolades, Leibovitz was the first female photographer to have her work displayed in a solo exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.
