“Passion is one great force that unleashes creativity, because if you're passionate about something, then you're more willing to take risks.”- Yo-Yo Ma, Grammy Award-Winning Cellist
Known for playing a wide variety of classical and folk music, 18-time Grammy Award-winning cellist Yo-Yo Ma celebrates his 64th birthday today. Ma’s musical gifts were discovered early in his life — he was considered a child prodigy and began performing in front of large audiences with his cello at just four years old. After graduating from Juilliard School and Harvard University, Ma became one of the world’s most in-demand musicians, recording more than 90 albums and often using his trademark instrument, a cello constructed in 1733 by the Italian master luthier Domenico Montagnana that is worth more than $2.5 million. Among his many accolades, Ma was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by U.S. President Barack Obama in 2011 for his celebrated work as a cellist.
