It has to be seen to be believed — more than 1,500 sheep will take over the streets of Hailey, Idaho this week as they head toward their winter home, an annual tradition known as the Trailing of the Sheep Festival. Entering its 23rd year, this annual tradition aims to preserve the rich history of sheep ranchers and herders in the area, drawing nearly 30,000 visitors over five days of nonstop events. A recipient of the Idaho Governor’s Award for Cultural Heritage and Cultural Tourism, the Trailing of the Sheep Festival is often ranked by travel publications as a must-attend event: Forbes ranked it among its “9 Fall Festivals Worth Traveling For” and Reader’s Digest included it in their article titled “14 Fall Events for add to your Bucket List” — and PASH couldn’t agree more. Featuring farm-to-table lamb dinners, sheepdog herding competitions, live music and a DIY art fair, the Trailing of the Sheep Festival truly has something for everyone.
